The Founding of Pontiac
The origins of Pontiac can be traced back to the Pontiac Buggy Company in Pontiac, Michigan. Founded in 1893 by Edward M. Murphy, the Pontiac Buggy Company specialized in manufacturing carriages and other horse-drawn vehicles for farmers and rural residents.
In 1907, General Motors took control of the company and repurposed it to build automobiles under the name “Pontiac Spring and Wagon Works.” However, the first car to actually bear the name Pontiac was not produced until 1926.
The Journey of Pontiac Cars
Pontiac came to be marketed as the sporty side of General Motors, in stark contrast to the more stately and luxurious Cadillac and Oldsmobile brands. Pontiac cars were routinely priced lower than many of their cousins, making them a great value for buyers.
Pontiac vehicles had plenty of power and performance to back up their image. Popular models such as the GTO, Firebird, and Grand Prix had muscle car performance to match their good looks. The Pontiac Trans Am® even took a starring role in the 1977 movie "Smokey and the Bandit" alongside Burt Reynolds and Sally Field, making it a household name.
Much to the disappointment of sportscar enthusiasts, the Pontiac brand was discontinued after the financial crash in 2008. Still, the legacy of Pontiac lives on through its many classic vehicles that still grace our roads and highways today.
